South Texas Tour

Arrived in Houston 10/19 and then…

Drove past grandpa Heinbeck’s old house (which Is gone) 1811 Wroxton, Houston.

Headed to New Braunfels and stopped at a tiny mexican place along the way and had a fried avocado! Oh and Buc-ees too. Have to stop at every Buc-ees.

Ubered to the Paul Thorn show in New Braunfels at Gruen Hall. Pronounced Green Hall haha

Air conditioner was broken at Fairfield Inn.

10/20 Sunday morning drive back through Gruen. Then to Luckenbach for a peek.  Stopped to visit Lillian and Jake and took a tour of their land. Found a little hole in the wall mexican place for lunch and the goodwill. Both so-so. But also found by accident a cool Texas Rangers memorial in Fredericksburg on the way to the WWII museum.

Then to the Nimitz museum for a few hours in downtown fredericksburg. One could spend all day in that museum. Sped south to San Antonio to see the Alamo but gave up due to parking. Then to the hotel just south of the city. But first stopped at HEB for dinner and groceries. They make fabulous BBQ.

Monday 10/21, headed to the King Ranch and took the bus tour. Lunch at the local original five and dime. So-so. Visited the saddle shop and museum and post office of course. Then south to Harlingen to the next hotel.

Tuesday 10/22 AM, drove south to Progreso and walked across the border. Had tacos twice. Once in restaurant- they were ok. Second time under a tent on the street. They were the best. $1 each. Bought a few inhalers for $2 each and headed back over the Rio Grande.

About 100 miles north of the Pregreso Nuevo had to stop for official border patrol inspection and also almost out of gas!  Then on to  Bay City.  Drove through Corpus Christi and saw beautiful sunset. Stopped at local Tex-Mex place for dinner.

Wednesday 10/23 off to Free Port and Surfside. Lunch in Galveston and tried to fly a faulty kite. Stopped to see the bats under the bridge in Houston and then on to Tomball to our next hotel (stayed two nights in a row!) and another Paul Thorn show at Main Street Crossing.

10/24 Thursday, took Michael to Johnson Space Center.  Then back to Tomball for the final Paul Thorn show.

10/25 Friday, La Porte to visit Doug and Tim Perfect and stayed at a hotel in Pasadena. I also retrieved my lost/stolen ipad from some jerks.

10/26 Saturday morning we went to the San Jacinto monument and then back to La Porte until it was time to head to the airport.

I know I missed a lot and will update as I remember. I will post pics separately.

1397 miles. Most of those in the first four days.
